The Paris 2024 Olympic Games surfing competitions may be held on Polynesian island Tahiti which is 15700km away of the French capital. The option was discussed at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board session held in Lausanne.
Also, Biarritz on the Bay of Biscay, Pointe La Torche as well as Hossegor-Seignosse-Capbreton and Lacanau, French southwestern communes, claim to host surfing competitions.
According to the French press Tahiti is a favorite in this struggle though it is rather far from Europe. The island boasts its waves and fine weather.
Earlier IOC President Thomas Bach had expressed his concern over the issue stressing that all the competitions should be held as close as possible to the 2024 Olympic Games continent.
Surfing is one of four sports that were included in the Paris 2024 program.
