The President of Armenia who is also the President of the Chess Federation of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, attended the opening ceremony of the 16th World Individual Deaf Chess Championships at the Chess House after Tigran Petrosian.
The tournament which will be held till May 26 is comprised of 7 subgroups. 120 chess players from 24 countries will take part in it. The opening ceremony was also attended by the FIDE president, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the President of the International Chess Committee of the Deaf , Philip Gardner, the Mayor of Yerevan, Taron Matgaryan and members of the Chess Federation of Armenia. RA President and FIDE President made the first moves on the chessboard signaling the start of the Championships.
Before the beginning of the Championships the President of Armenia and the President of FIDE laid flowers at the memorial of Tigran Petrosian and paid tribute to his memory. In the framework of the ceremony the automated program of interpretation, surdo, for deaf-mute was also represented to the President of Armenia.
