Japanese authorities have selected the emblems of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Organizing Committee of the Games has presented the new emblem which expresses the refined style of the Edo period (1603-1868). The new emblem is called “Kumitimatsumo”. The selection of the emblem has been made among the 4 emblems designs reached the final.
Last year the first design of the emblem caused a scandal because its author, Kenjiro Sano, was blamed of plagiarizing the emblem design. Belgian designer Olivier Debie who had created an emblem for a Belgian theatre noticed similarity between his and Sano’s emblem. The Belgian went to court urging the International Olympic Committee to refuse from the selected emblem.
Later the IOC revoked its decision about the selected emblem and launched a new competition which was open for everyone over 18 years-old in Japan.
The ХХХII Summer Olympic Games will be held in Tokyo from July 24 to August 9, 2020.
