The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee has accepted the International Boxing Association’s (AIBA) proposal - not to wear boxing head guards during the Rio Olympic Games.
“We are happy that the IOC has accepted our proposal. This decision was long awaited by box amateurs. Our researches have shown that head guars cause only harm in boxing”, AIBA President Ching-Kuo Wu stressed.
Amateur boxers stopped using head guards in 2013. AIBA provided medical and technical data that showed the number of concussions is lower without headgear.
Olympic boxers have been using protective head guards since the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.
