On the second day of the Greco-Roman wrestling competition of the Junior European Championship underway in Pontevedra, Spain four Armenian representatives began their performances. Two of them qualified for the finals. Hayk Melikyan (67 kg) and Malkhas Amoyan (72 kg) will fight for European champion title on June 5.
Hayk Melikyan started the struggle from the 1/8 finals overcoming Serbia’s (8:0), Austria’s (14:5) and Russia’s (10:1) representatives and qualifying for the final. The Armenian wrestler will wrestle against Georgian Georgi Shotadze for a gold medal.
Malkhas Amoyan entered the competition from the qualification round and gained four victories. He was stronger than Italian (9:0), Turk (6:1), Georgian (8:4) and Russian (5:4) opponents and reached the final where he will compete with Moldavian Mihai Petic.
Sahak Hovhannisyan (60 kg) started from the 1/8 finals and defeated Spanish (11:0) and Hungarian (8:0) wrestlers but lost 1:4 to Georgia’s representative in the semifinals. On June 5 Hovhannisyan will spend a fight for a bronze medal.
Karen Khachatryan (82 kg) after a victorious start suffered defeat in the 1/8 finals. The Hungarian wrestler who defeated Khachatryan reached the final and the Armenian representative got a chance to fight for a bronze medal on June 5.
Let us recall on June 4 Hrachya Poghosyan (63 kg) and Gevorg Sukiasyan (55 kg) will struggle for bronze medals.
