From October 17 to 18 the 7th Intercontinental Freestyle Wrestling Cup was held in Khasavyurt, Dagestan which since 2006 has replaced the memorial tournament after world cup winner Shamil Umakhanov. Armenia wss represented by 8 wrestlers in three weight classes: Grigor Grigoryan, Varuzhan Kajoyan (74kg), Musa Murtazaliev, Shamir Atyan, Vahe Tamrazyan (86kg), Edgar Yenokyan, Victor Kazishvili, Andranik Galstyan (97kg).

The Armenian athletes didn’t succeed in winning any medal. Shamir Atyan (86kg) was very close to the bronze medal finishing all the fights ahead of time by touché. Our athlete prevailed on the Azerbaijani Magomed Abdukhilikov in 1/6 finals, in 1/8 finals Stephan Georgitsa (Moldova), in ¼ finals he defeated the Canadian representative Tamerlan Tagziev. In semi-finals the opponent of Atyan was the Lezgian Dauren Kurguliev. The Armenian wrestler lost with a score of 10:0 to the Russian athlete who became the tournament winner. In the fight for the bronze medal Shamir Atyan lost ( 2:11) to Tamerlan Akhmedov (Russia).
