President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach has commented on the strict sanctions against Russia. On 9 December the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) deprived Russia of the right to participate in all international tournaments for 4 years (including the Olympic Games and world championships) because of violating the Anti-Doping Charter.
“I won’t speculate on the developments of the events but WADA’s decision is mandatory for the International Olympic Committee. The IOC is a supporter of rule of law and that’s why we will fulfill that decision,” Thomas Bach said.
Russian athletes not suspected in using doping will be allowed to participate in the tournaments under an IOC flag. Russia has 21 days to appeal the decision.
