Armen Melikyan (60 kg) who had won a gold medal at the U23 Senior World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship in Budapest, Hungary, after returning home shared his impressions with the ANOC press service in a briefing.
“I dedicate my victory to the Armenian people. I’m very pleased with my coaches and thank God for my win. The final bout was a little hard because I had already an injury and my rival was beating me much. I was bleeding and there was a moment when I could hardly breathe. I need to go ahead after this victory. There are Olympic qualifiers where I must win a medal and qualification,” the wrestler said.
In Budapest Armen Melikyan had had 4 victories. On his way to the final he had conceded no point to the rivals and on 3 November had won 11:7 Kyrgyzstan’s Zholaman Sharshenbekov in a decisive bout.
Armen Melikyan had started the competition on 2 November and on his way to the final had won Bulgarian Martin Velev (8:0), Iranian Mehdi Mohsen (4:0) and Hungarian Krisztian Keckemeti (5:0).
The Armenia Greco-Roman wrestling team had ended its performance in the World Championship with one gold and one bronze medal. On 2 November Davit Ovasapyan (130 kg) had become a bronze medalist.
Other members of the Armenia U23 Greco-Roman wrestling team Norayr Hakhoyan (55 kg), Hayk Melikyan (67 kg), Slavik Galstyan (63 kg), Hrant Kalachyan (72 kg), Vahe Poghosyan (77 kg) and Albert Yeghikyan (87 kg) had failed to win medals in Budapest. Norayr Hakhoyan and Arman Vardumyan had suffered defeat in a bout for a bronze medal.
