Armen Melikyan (60 kg) became a gold medalist of the U23 Senior World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship coming to an end in Budapest, Hungary.
In the final the Armenian representative won 11:7 Kyrgyzstan’s Zholaman Sharshenbekov.
Armen Melikyan had started the competition on 2 November and on his way to the final had won Bulgarian Martin Velev (8:0), Iranian Mehdi Mohsen (4:0) and Hungarian Krisztian Keckemeti (5:0).
On 3 November Arman Vardumyan (82 kg) overcame 10:6 Turkmenistan’s Toyly Orazov in the only repechage bout while lost 7:16 to Kazakh Yevgeniy Polivadov ahead of time in the bronze final.
The Armenia Greco-Roman wrestling team ended its performance in the World Championship with one gold and one bronze medal. On 2 November Davit Ovasapyan (130 kg) had become a bronze medalist.
Other members of the Armenia U23 Greco-Roman wrestling team Norayr Hakhoyan (55 kg), Hayk Melikyan (67 kg), Slavik Galstyan (63 kg), Hrant Kalachyan (72 kg), Vahe Poghosyan (77 kg) and Albert Yeghikyan (87 kg) failed to win medals in Budapest. Norayr Hakhoyan had suffered defeat in a bout for a bronze medal.
Let us recall earlier the Armenia U23 freestyle wrestling team which had joined the World Championship with 9 wrestlers had ended its performance without a medal.
