Head coach of the Armenia freestyle wrestling youth team Avetik Vardanyan summed up the Junior European Championship in Spanish Pontevedra where Armenia’s representatives won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
“During the last training camp I said the team was well-prepared. We were expecting high results though the team’s best wrestlers were missing because of injuries.
I’m glad we discover new names every year and don’t pin our hopes on 2-3 wrestlers and expect medals of them. For example, I can’t say anything about Hrachya, he just surprised us all. Before this championship he hadn’t achieved any success. He got his chance and lived up our expectations. He left the “death squad”. He won such strong wrestlers; it was surprising. And in the final you all saw he won with an obvious advantage.
I’m sorry our wrestlers who wrestled in the semifinals lost. If they conceded to stronger wrestlers that fact wouldn’t be so painful but they lost in equal fights.
These results are a big team work. Everyone does his job devotedly and the guys work hard.
There will be changes in the lineup going to the World Championship. I can only say we aren’t going there with nine wrestlers.
Now we will return to Yerevan, will have a rest for a week then we will leave for Georgia to a rehabilitation training camp. Again we’ll have a week off. From June 22 to July 3 we will have a joint training camp with the adults’ team. The last training camp before the World Championship we will conduct abroad but the place isn’t known yet,” the coach said.
The Armenia freestyle wrestling youth team had left for the European Championship with nine wrestlers and won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals. On June 8 Arman Andreasyan (70 kg) and Arman Avagyan (79 kg) had been named bronze medalists.
