President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach has commented on the decision to maintain boxing in the program of the 32nd Summer Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo. “The decision was taken in the interests of the athletes and the sport of boxing. We want all boxers realize their dream and participate in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 while the final decision on the AIBA will be made after the investigation. At the same time we offer to cancel the sanctions but the AIBA needs to change its tactics drastically,” Thomas Bach said. Earlier the IOC had suspended the membership of the International Boxing Association (AIBA). The AIBA had also been deprived of the right to organize the qualification and final rounds of the Tokyo 2020 boxing tournament. Its organization had been passed to a task group chaired by a member of the Japan Olympic Committee. The qualifiers of the Tokyo 2020 boxing tournament will be held from January to June of 2020. The IOC will discuss the AIBA’s membership after the Olympic Games.
