The 31st Summer Olympics are over. During the last weeks in Rio the strongest athletes from different parts of the world were competing for a champion title.
Greco-Roman wrestler Artur Aleksanyan conquered the second gold medal in the history of Armenia. Armenia after a 20-year break has an Olympic champion again.
Independent Armenia could have had its third champion, but the referees' harsh and biased decision deprived Mihran Harutyunyan (66kg) of the delight to stand on the first stair of the honorary platform. The Olympic gold was given to the Serbian wrestler due to referees' disgraceful decision and Harutyunyan received the Olympic silver.
In the men's 105kg weight class competition Nanjing Olympic champion, weightlifter Simon Martirosyan became a silver medalist with a total of 417kg. Gor Minasyan (105+kg) became an Olympic silver medalist too. The weightlifter from Gyumri had scored 451kg.
Freestyle wrestler Levan Berianidze was very close to a bronze medal but got satisfied only with 5th position. Another weightlifter of the Armenian Olympic team, Ruben Aleksanyan, fall a step behind the honorary platform.
At the unofficial medal count Armenia places 42nd among 206 countries.
